Stockroom has been shortlisted for Project of the Year - Public Sector & Cultural Interiors at the Mix Awards 2026, recognising the project's contribution to civic design, community engagement and town centre regeneration.

Delivered for Stockport Council as part of the wider transformation of Merseyway Shopping Centre, the £14.5 million scheme reimagines former retail units as a new cultural and creative destination for the town. Bringing together a modern library, children's discovery spaces, archives, exhibition areas, creative workspaces and flexible event spaces under one roof, Stockroom represents a new model for how civic spaces can support communities, learning and cultural activity.

The project reflects a growing shift in how towns and cities are approaching regeneration. As traditional retail centres continue to evolve, many local authorities are exploring new ways to create destinations that encourage footfall, support local identity and provide lasting social value. Cultural and community-led spaces are increasingly playing a central role in that transformation.

Working alongside AEW Architects and the wider consultant and delivery team, SpaceInvader developed an interior design approach focused on creating an environment that feels inclusive, engaging and deeply connected to Stockport's character. The design balances civic function with creativity, accessibility and adaptability, ensuring the space can support a diverse range of activities and users both now and in the future.

From welcoming library environments and flexible event spaces to areas dedicated to learning, creativity and community gathering, the project was designed to encourage participation and make culture more accessible within the heart of the town centre.

The shortlist follows a number of previous industry recognitions for Stockroom, including awards and commendations celebrating its contribution to regeneration, placemaking and community-focused design. Together, these acknowledgements reflect the growing importance of civic and cultural projects in shaping the future of town centres across the UK.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that demonstrates the value of design in creating meaningful public spaces and supporting long-term community impact.

Congratulations to Stockport Council, AEW Architects and the entire project team on this latest recognition.

Winners of the Mix Awards 2026 will be announced on 25 June at Evolution, Battersea.
