Stockroom named finalist for Building of the Year 2025

Stockroom civic interior with bookshelves, communal tables and colourful seating

Stockroom, Stockport

Stockroom has been announced as a finalist for Building of the Year 2025, recognised by Greater Manchester Chamber.

Located within Stockport’s Merseyway Shopping Centre, Stockroom is a 51,000 sq ft transformation that reimagines previously vacant retail units as a welcoming civic hub for the town. SpaceInvader led the interior design, shaping a flexible, people-first destination that brings together a modern library, creative zones, a heritage archive, studios and event spaces for everyday use.

The shortlist recognition reflects the ambition behind repurposing existing town-centre space and the collective effort required to deliver it, from early stakeholder engagement through to the final user experience. Since opening in May 2025, Stockroom has welcomed over 500,000 visitors, demonstrating how community-led, people-focused design can help restore activity, pride and connection at the heart of a place.

Congratulations to Stockport Council and the wider project team: AEW Architects, Tier Consult Group, CBRE, S I Sealy & Associates, Dodd Group, Nationwide CDM, BB7, CW Studio Ltd and AVM Solutions.
