The Renold Building receives the Innovation Award at the BCO Northern Awards
Two SpaceInvader projects were recognised across three categories at this year’s BCO Northern Awards, reflecting the breadth of approaches currently shaping workplace design across the region.
The Renold Building at Sister Manchester received a Highly Commended in the Refurbished/Recycled Workplace category before also being awarded the judges’ Innovation Award. Meanwhile, Chancery Place, Manchester, designed for Overbury, was named winner in the Projects up to 2,500m² category.
Held annually by the British Council for Offices, the awards celebrate quality and innovation across the workplace sector, recognising projects that respond to evolving ways of working through design, sustainability and user experience.
The recognition for The Renold Building highlights the growing role of circular design and adaptive reuse within commercial interiors. Originally a 1960s university building, the project was transformed into a multi-tenant innovation hub using a circular-first approach that retained and repurposed more than 95% of existing furniture, fittings and materials. The project demonstrates how reuse can support not only environmental performance, but also flexibility and long-term commercial resilience.
Chancery Place reflects a different scale and approach, delivering a workplace environment designed around quality of experience, adaptability and day-to-day usability. The award reinforces the continued demand for carefully considered workplaces that balance functionality with a strong sense of identity and occupier appeal.
What stood out across the evening was the diversity of projects being recognised. From retrofit-led schemes to highly tailored workplace environments, the awards reflected the range of thinking currently driving the commercial interiors sector across the North.
The recognition also highlights the collaborative nature of workplace design projects, with clients, consultants, contractors and specialist teams all playing a critical role in delivering successful outcomes.
Project teams included Bruntwood SciTech, Richard Boothroyd & Associates, Crookes Walker Consulting and Overbury on The Renold Building, alongside Overbury on Chancery Place.
Congratulations to all winners and shortlisted teams recognised across this year’s awards.
