John Williams intervieed by Design Insider

John Williams, Director & Founder, SpaceInvader

Who would make it onto your ultimate dinner party guest list? For John Williams, our Director and Founder, it’s a chance to reflect on the people and passions that have influenced his career in commercial interior design. As featured in Design Insider, John’s imagined gathering is set in an idyllic English outdoor venue, lush greenery, the sound of nearby water, and food cooked as close as possible to its source.

The menu? A British take on a classic Italian four-course meal, beginning with spicy margaritas and followed by wines carefully paired with each dish. As for the soundtrack, an acoustic set from Paul McCartney transitions to house music at sunset with Chaos in the CBD, and crescendos with Underworld into the night.

A Creative Guest List Shaping a Design Journey

Each guest represents a unique influence on John’s approach to design:

  • Mark Demsteader, the figurative artist who first taught John to see mood and movement in every line.

  • Nick Drake, whose music became a companion during reflective years in America.

  • Zaha Hadid, whose daring forms and boundless energy inspire John to think beyond convention.

  • Jaime Hayon, blending design, art, and sculpture in a way that challenges creative boundaries.

  • Stewart Copeland, legendary drummer, a reminder of rhythm and energy in both music and design.

  • The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas’s fictional character, symbolising patience, determination, and transformation.

A Design Philosophy Rooted in Inspiration

This playful yet thoughtful feature reveals how John’s cultural and artistic influences inform SpaceInvader’s people-focused, story-driven approach to interior design. It underlines the belief that great design isn’t just functional, it’s deeply human, drawing on layers of narrative, memory, and experience.

We’re proud to see John’s story featured in Design Insider, a platform celebrating cross-sector innovation in design.
