What everyday objects can teach us about good design

Shreena Patel, Senior Interior Designer, SpaceInvader

Great design is not always about creating something new. Sometimes, it is about improving the experiences people have every day.

Recently featured in Design Insider's Re-Design vs Design Perfection series, SpaceInvader Senior Interior Designer Shreena Patel reflected on two familiar products that demonstrate very different design outcomes: the humble umbrella and a backpack that has become an essential part of her working day.

While the objects themselves may seem unremarkable, they highlight a principle that sits at the heart of successful design across every scale. The most effective solutions are not necessarily the most complex or visually striking. Instead, they are the ones that perform consistently, respond to genuine user needs and improve everyday experiences.

The umbrella is something most people have replaced multiple times. Despite being designed to solve a simple problem, many fail when conditions become challenging, often due to poor durability or functionality. By contrast, the backpack Shreena selected has earned its place through thoughtful design, longevity and practical performance. It continues to support its user day after day, proving that good design is often measured over time rather than at first glance.

These examples offer valuable lessons that extend far beyond product design. Whether designing a workplace, hospitality environment, hotel, stadia or community space, the same principles apply. Successful design must balance aesthetics with functionality, creating environments that are intuitive, adaptable and built around the people who use them.

At SpaceInvader, we believe great design should do more than look good. It should solve problems, support wellbeing and create lasting value. From everyday products to large-scale commercial interiors, thoughtful design has the power to shape experiences, influence behaviour and improve the way people interact with the world around them.

Shreena's contribution to Design Insider serves as a reminder that inspiration can often be found in the simplest places. By paying attention to the objects we use every day, designers can gain valuable insight into what truly makes a solution successful: functionality, durability and a genuine understanding of human needs.
